Jade, Buddhas and a Hollywood Legend: Swoboda in China and Japan

Why Swoboda’s genuine jade, coral and Buddha pieces speak to collectors in China and Japan — and how a Chinese antiques gallery came to call it a brand ‘beloved by Hollywood stars.’

Some of Swoboda’s most devoted collectors live far from Los Angeles — in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo and Osaka.

“A heritage brand beloved by many Hollywood stars”

Among the pictures in Nate’s archive is a screenshot of a Chinese antiques gallery’s web page. Across a collage of women wearing gemstone necklaces runs a line in elegant script:

真宝石首饰系列 · 众多好莱坞明星心仪的古老品牌 · 演绎了久传世的经典之美

Genuine-gemstone jewelry — a heritage brand beloved by many Hollywood stars — interpreting a classic beauty handed down through time.

Below it, a row of Swoboda crown and flower brooches. It is a lovely piece of evidence that the story of the brand — real stones, golden-age glamour — travels perfectly well without translation.

Why jade

For seven thousand years nephrite jade has stood for beauty, purity and grace in China; in the imperial era it was prized above gold. Swoboda is, above all, a jade house: carved jade leaves on gold stems, jade blossoms with garnet hearts, jade Buddhas framed in coral and pearl. For a collector who grew up with 玉 as a family heirloom, a Swoboda jade piece is both familiar and surprising — classical material, Hollywood design.

Why Japan

In Japan the connection runs through film. In 1952 Margaret O’Brien — later a friend of Nate’s, often photographed in Swoboda — made 二人の瞳 in Tokyo with Hibari Misora. Read that story.

Japanese collectors also prize what Swoboda does best: hand-set craftsmanship, one-of-a-kind combinations of stones, and pieces that last a lifetime with care.
